Public health advisory: HIV in Fiji
Te Whatu Ora is alerting healthcare professionals to the continued rapid rise in HIV diagnoses in Fiji. New cases increased from 245 in 2022 to 415 in 2023, 1,583 in 2024, and 2,013 in 2025. Of the 2025 cases with a known mode of transmission, 42.6% were acquired through injecting drug use and 50.3% through sexual transmission, with perinatal transmission also occurring.
Cases in Aotearoa New Zealand linked to the Fiji outbreak have been reported. Clinicians are encouraged to maintain a high index of suspicion for HIV in patients with recent travel to or connections with Fiji.
